Editor Rusty's Rap:  What Should We Look for While Tasting?

Last two of my wine workshops (this past March in San Diego and again in Phoenix), the audience and I discussed Four S's (See, Swirl, Smell and Sip), then Big S (go check the video in the past Deaf Grapevine 2012, No. 1 Spring issue).  At this point, the question frequently asked is what we should look for while sipping.  There are so many things to look for in your wine but for the sake of simplicity I've listed four important components for my audience.  I'm glad to write down these in this newsletter:
  • Fruit intensity
  • Degree of sweetness (dry? It may mean no residual sugar left in a wine)
  • Acidity - Crispness
  • Tannins
  • Check for wine's oaky flavors (especially Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay) and balance.  The best wines have a seamless sense of harmony and balance between all four components.  Hard to tell?  That's why we have wine tasting parties and share with our fellow wine enthusiasts our discoveries in our wines!

    Most Expensive Bottle of Wine?

Although not old or rare, a bottle of 1992 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon was sold for $500,000 at the 2010 Napa Valley (Calif.) Wine Auction.  It has become the world's most expensive wine, surpassing many old and rare wines such as second most expensive Chateau Margaux 1787 (value approx. $390,000)!  Even France's unopened 1907 Gout Americain Champagne bottle obtained from the sunken Titanic ship (still in the ongoing court battle over who should own it).  What makes this most expensive Screaming Eagle bottle so special may be its size, 6 liter as compared to typical 750 ml kind you normally find at a store (1,000 ml = 1 liter).  Anyone who has a 6-liter bottle of wine should plan a BIG party!

    News in the Deaf Community:

On February 28th, by popular demand Bobby and Rusty were asked to give a wine presentation at the Sun City Grand! Due to strict restriction of serving wine at the Sun City clubhouse, we served at the Skedsmo's Arizona residence.  74 folks came and the Skedsmo served horsd'oeovre and homemade wine.  Near the end Bobby brought out a sole cactus and announced that the guests had the honor of picking a site for the sole cactus to be planted.  As he picked up the cactus, he let slipped the cactus and got stuck with the needles and Francine went to assist him "pulling the needles" out.  Then he announced it was a joke.  The cactus looked real but it was an artificial plant.  We all had a good laugh. After the happy hour was done, we all went to the Cimarron Center, where Rusty and Bobby gave their presentation.

The presentation began with a role playing of what 7 things were wrong with the wine ethnics at the performance.  The audience participated with what were wrong.  Other topics covered the 5 S's of see, swirl, smell, sip and savor; wine for health and wealth; why some wine are more expensive than others and many more fabulous information.  Videos and overhead projector showed ample pictures of how to make wines, which wines go well with which food and so on.  We had a participant from the crowd to sample two glasses of same wine blindfolded.  Interesting that there was a difference in tasting between two kinds of glasses.  After the presentation, the audience had more horsd'oeovre to fill their stomachs.

Everyone commented that this presentation was an eye opening learning experience and none were bored with the presentation.  Everyone had a great time!
