Wine Quotation:

"Wine to me is passion. It's family and friends.
It's warmth of heart and generosity of spirit. Wine is art. It's culture.
It's the essence of civilization and the art of living."

Robert Mondavi, American winemaker, (1913-2008) in Harvests of Joy (Autobiography)

Editor Rusty’s Rap:   Back to Basic Wine 101,  Wine Tasting  -  Readers’ Question

Four S’ plus one Big S
(See, Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor)

I have received similar questions from my readers: do we have to do Four S' every time we drink 2nd, 3rd time and so forth?  The answer is No, only when you open a bottle for the first time.  When you buy wine that you are unfamiliar with, you want to "test the water" or with wine "see, swirl, smell, sip".  If it meets your expectations then "dive-in" and enjoy.  Remember to use Four S' after first pour.  If it is to your liking, enjoy the wine without repeating seeing, swirling, smelling and sipping.  Savor and enjoy your newly-discovered wine all evening!

Wine Making:

Question of the month:
If the juice of red wine grapes is transparent (clear white), then where on earth did the wine get red color as a final product from that clear juice?  If you have a red grape on hand and cut it open to remove red skin, what color would you find in this core or pulp?  It is transparent (clear), not red or purple.  Welch's Grape Juice must be dyed with artificial colors, or at least coloring from other sources, not from the grape!

Special Section for Summertime:
When the hot weather arrives, I might drink an ice-cold beer for a change.  However, as a wine lover, I'd like to continue with my favorite wine, usually chilled white wine.  I even enjoy recipes where wine is mixed with other ingredients.  Try these as I think you will enjoy.

  • WINE COOLER - 4 oz. red or white wine, 2 oz. pineapple juice, 2 oz. club soda and a wedge of lemon or lime. Mix all ingredients in a chilled large wine glass and stir gently.

  • SANGRIA - 1 bottle red wine, 2 oz. Triple Sec, 2 oz. brandy, 2 oz. orange juice, splash of lemon juice and 10 oz. club soda.  Mix all ingredients except club soda in a pitcher and chill the mixture in a fridge for at least two hours.  Before serving, add cold club soda and garnish with fresh orange and lemon slices.  Delicious!

Fun Fact:  Amazing Mechanical Wine Server

Would you buy this mechanical tool for hundreds of dollars?  It would make a great dinnertime conversation piece don't you think!  However I will continue to use my $12 corkscrew opener, pour my wine myself while I entertain my friends!  Thanks to Shirley G. for forwarding this funny video!
