Editorial Comments:  As the years went by, I've appreciated wine more and more.  Is it because I am aging just like the wine I drink; after all, wine improves with age and so are we, right?  In truth, the statistics reveal that more wine are sold during this decade than ever before, as it gains an all-time popularity.  I made my own wine almost every year and I've come to discriminate what makes a good wine.  Along the way, I’ve gathered information, so much that they are kept in three notebooks, not to mention some of those materials scattered over my desk, workshop and bookcases, hence irking my wife, Karen!  Friends who gather seem to enjoy discussing wine facts together and so for this reason, this Deaf Grapevine newsletter starts.  Your comments and/or contributions to this publication are always welcome!

Fun fact:  The wreck of the TITANIC holds the oldest wine cellar in the world and despite the depth of the wreckage, the bottles are still intact!  (Ed. note: where can I pick up a bottle?)

Trivia question (answer in the next issue):  The year on a wine bottle signifies that the vintage is

      (a)  a wine of character or quality.
      (b)  the year in which a specific wine is bottled.
      (c)  the year in which the grapes are picked.
      (d)  French term for "harvest".

Wine Making:  Poor soil quality tends to produce better wines.  Never add any type of fertilizer in the soil.  The trick is to "challenge" the vines by making them "work" harder.  (source: Inglenook Vineyards)

Wine of the Month:  Barnard Griffin Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley, WA) $13-17.  No wonder it won Pacific Northwest Winery of the Year in 2006.  Best buy.  Try their Merlot and other varieties.
