Tamarancho Trail near Fairfax

Ethan Bernstein - Bobby Skedsmo - David Call - Debbie Call - Nancy Cayton
Sean Virnig - Bob Morrison

On October 24, we had a big day at the Tamarancho Trail near Fairfax in Marin County.  There were 44 switchbacks all the way around the loop.  There was downhill-only trail of one mile long.  It has about 24 berm turns (banked turns as opposed to switchbacks).  It was thrilling and exciting experience for us. Excellent mountain biking trails!  This is where the mountain biking is born in the late 1970.

Bob Morrison - Nancy Cayton - Taylor Couvreur - Jack Lamberton - Alicia Flores
Maratha Koetz - Graham Koetz - Debbie Call - David Call - Bobby Skedsmo

On June 28 near San Rafael, 5 men and 5 ladies started 9-mile trail loop in the morning at 10.  It took them to complete the loop in 1:22 hours and climbed only 817 feet which was not that bad. They had several times for re-grouping. The trail was fantastic even for any beginner, but this sport requires endurance, core strength and balance, bike handling skills, and self-reliance. Everybody loved it!

Video:  Sorry for not having smooth filming with the GoPro.  Bobby thinks he has to learn how to operate it better next time.  Here is the video

The views were spectacular along the way to where we dined at the Max's restaurant at the end of trail near the San Francisco International Airport.  We should give the little kids high waving hands for their accomplishment.  I (Bobby) must admit that I was somewhat nervous about their quest for long ride.  It was their parents who have faith in them!  Praise to them!

For most of the way, the trail meanders along the Coyote Creek south of the city of San Jose.   The first 3 miles contained several slopes, one of which was 5% gradation with a hairpin turn.  It also included a velodrome, which was in use every Saturday morning, and you might want to stop and check out this activity.  There was also a rest room here.  The next 6 miles were very flat but contained fibrous root bumps.  Credit to Bob Morrison as the road captain!

Greeting Cyclists!  What a beautiful cold crispy morning as replied by one of the cyclists!  We rode through the Temecula Wine Country and as soon as the sun rose we saw several hot air balloons floating through the sky.  When we got to the first sag stop, George missed a turn off and he got to see more of the Wine Country than us!  After our ride back to town hall, we browsed among the exhibitions held by different organizations and of course, we took an advantage of the cycling products for discounted price.  Frank, George and I pedalled back home where a BBQ meal awaiting us prepared by TC and Desiree.  Thank you the ladies for feeding us hungry cyclists after 45 miles trek in less than 3 hours.  Before I forgot and not at least, let us give a warm welcome to Tom L. from Chicago.  It was his first bike ride with us.  Welcome Tom!

A group from Southern California (Riverside) had another fun bike tour starting in Redondo Beach going north through different places along the broadwalk by the beach and back. It was scenic bike route.  WwooowW!  They could not be able to have the same views if they were for riding in a car.  One of the highlights of the tour was to watch a jumbo jet flying low toward the Pacific Ocean from LAX and at the same time they had to keep their eyes on the path.  They completed a course of 32 miles in two hours and 30 minutes.  At the conclusion of their bike ride tour, they got a big reward for themselves by having a feast at the Redondo Beach Lobster Festival.  Please make a note for their next bike ride at the Temecula wine country on October 12.  Paul hopes to see you all by then.

A shuttle brought the riders to the top of the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, where this photo was taken. The downhill run was close to 15 miles. The picture was taken at the top of the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. There is no doubt many of us would like to repeat the experience this summer. Please stay tuned for the round two!

The New Bike Ride is a Smashing Success

Iron Horse Trail

On Sunday, April 10, the California Deaf Wheelers (CDW) inaugurated its first "Coffee Bike Ride" at the Iron Horse Regional Trail between Dublin and Danville. Twenty-four persons, age ranging from 6 to 70, showed up to participate in this milestone event. After completing the full length of the ride, many participants strongly agreed that it was perfectly designed for anybody. CDW plans various monthly bike outings such as the mountain bike rides, the road bike rides, and occasionally serious and strenuous road bike roads favored by bike racers. Now they have another branch that caters to the desires of those who may be less vigorous but still enjoy bike riding as a recreational pursuit without having to exert too much energy.

One of these flat scenic bike routes is conducted each month from April to October.  Eight bike routes are being planned for your enjoyment. Keep your eye on the Events at the left panel when the date becomes available.
